Samuel Seabury account book, 1746-1811.

Leather-bound account book kept by Rev. Samuel Seabury, his son Dr. Samuel Seabury, and daughter Elizabeth Seabury of Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y., 1746-1811. Rev. Seabury took over his son's medical practice in 1753, and opened a boarding school in Hempstead. The account book contains records of medicine administered and payments received by Dr. Seabury, 1746-53; medical services provided by Rev. Seabury, as well as personal goods purchased, 1753-64; and records of students at the boarding school, kept by Rev. Seabury and Elizabeth, 1753-1811. Account book also contains directions for use and formulas for creating medicines.

Samuel Seabury, a signer, was the father of Samuel Seabury, first bishop of the Protestant Episcopal Church in America. He graduated Harvard in 1724, and served as clergyman at New London, Conn., and Hempstead, Long Island, N.Y.
